Level8 black Textured Carry on

Level8 Luminous Textured Carry-On Review

As a travel blogger, I’ve tested more suitcases than I can count. From budget-friendly options to premium models promising “lifetime” durability, I’ve put them through the wringer on cobblestoned streets, tiny regional planes, and everything in between. Over the years, I’ve learned I prefer structured hard carry-ons: not only do they keep my belongings protected, but the boxy shape makes it so much easier to pack everything neatly into compartments. Everything has a place, nothing gets crushed, and it’s far less stressful when I need to quickly grab something at the airport.

Recently, I had the chance to try the Level8 Luminous Textured 20″ Carry-On, which I chose in a timeless black color. Black always feels like the safest option because it’s classic, versatile, and less likely to show dirt, knocks, and scuffs. While I would love to have a white carry on, I’ve seen how dirty they can look after a few trips. This Level8 carry-on comes in an array of colors though, and my second choice color would’ve been the olivine green color.

What immediately caught my attention about this case, though, was the textured surface. Unlike many glossy or smooth hard shells (including my Away carry-on), the Luminous Textured design actually hides scratches and dings remarkably well. Even after being thrown around in the trunk of a car or in an overhead bin, it still looks polished and sophisticated. Honestly, I think it looks more elevated than the Away, while also proving more practical in real life.

But aesthetics aside, let’s get into the details. Here’s my in-depth review after traveling with this case, including what I loved, what I didn’t, and whether it’s worth adding to your travel gear.

First Impressions

When the suitcase first arrived, I was impressed by how sturdy it looked while still feeling manageable to carry. The Makrolon® polycarbonate hard shell feels solid to the touch, with just enough give so it doesn’t feel brittle. The diamond-textured surface is the real star, giving the bag a premium finish that looks chic without being flashy.

Rolling it around my apartment as a quick “test drive,” I noticed how smooth and quiet the wheels were. Level8 uses anti-shock 360° spinner wheels designed to glide effortlessly, and I could tell right away they were a cut above the cheaper carry-ons I’ve owned in the past. That first impression proved true once I got it into a busy train station. Even weaving through crowds, the case moved fluidly, and I could easily push or pull it beside me without struggling.

Other notable features include a 3-step aluminum telescopic handle with a swing range of less than 1 cm, as well as a TSA-approved combination lock so you don’t have to worry about theft of your belongings.

I also appreciated the side and top handles, something not every carry-on offers. When you’re heaving a bag into an overhead bin or pulling it out of a packed taxi trunk, those extra grip points are lifesavers.

This suitcase comes in 18”, 20”, 24”, or 28” options, so you can order a cabin bag and a checked bag to match.

Packing & Organization

One of the reasons I love structured hard carry-ons is how neatly everything fits. The Level8 case didn’t disappoint. Inside, the layout is refreshingly simple: two main compartments separated by zipped fabric dividers, plus a pair of smaller mesh pockets perfect for underwear, socks, or cords.

I used one side for clothing and the other for “extras” – my camera gear, toiletries, shoes and a light jacket. The zipped dividers kept everything contained, so nothing shifted around mid-journey. I especially appreciated that when I opened the bag in a hotel room, everything stayed put instead of tumbling out. With the compression straps and zipped covers, it was easy to maximize every inch of space without feeling crammed. If you want to organize your clothing even better, you can purchase your case with a set of packing cubes to maximize space.

On the Road: My Experience

The Good

  • Smooth Gliding Wheels: One of the highlights. The wheels are whisper-quiet and roll effortlessly. Even when I had it packed to the brim, I could push it with one hand through the airport. On polished floors, it practically glided by itself.
  • Handles That Make Sense: Having both a top and side handle seems minor, but it makes life so much easier. I didn’t have to awkwardly twist my wrist when pulling it from an overhead bin.
  • Durability: On my first outing, I accidentally knocked the case over on rough concrete. The plastic telescopic handle got a bit scuffed, but the body itself didn’t show any marks.
  • Locking Zippers: The TSA-approved lock gives peace of mind, especially when leaving luggage in hotels or using overhead bins. The zippers feel sturdy and unlikely to break under pressure.
  • Sophisticated Aesthetic: The textured finish elevates the look -it feels modern and chic. In black, it’s understated but sharp enough to feel like a premium accessory.

The Not-So-Great

  • Weight: At 7.7 lb, it’s not the lightest carry-on on the market. If you’re flying airlines with strict weight limits for carry-on luggage, you’ll need to be mindful of packing.
  • Handle Scuffing: While the polycarbonate body is resilient, the telescopic handle did show cosmetic scuffs after my tumble. Functionally, it’s fine, but it’s worth noting.
  • No External Pockets: Like most hard shells, you lose the convenience of quick-access outer pockets. I definitely needed a smaller personal bag for my boarding pass or water bottle.

How It Compares to Other Brands

Since many people compare Level8 to other direct-to-consumer luggage brands, let’s look at how it stacks up against some popular competitors:

  • Away: I own the Away Carry-On, and while it’s stylish, I actually prefer the textured finish of the Level8. The Away shows scratches far more easily. Level8 also feels sturdier overall, though it is slightly heavier.
  • Monos: Monos has a minimalist aesthetic I love, but its smooth shells also scuff more noticeably. The interiors are comparable, though I find Level8’s zippers a touch sturdier.
  • Rimowa: Rimowa is iconic but comes with a luxury price tag. Level8 gives you a very similar level of durability and maneuverability at a fraction of the cost.

Overall, Level8 offers an impressive middle ground: premium feel and performance without the sticker shock of high-end designer brands.

Who This Carry-On is For

The Level8 Luminous Textured Carry-On is ideal if you:

  • Travel frequently and need a case that looks good while standing up to wear and tear.
  • Value structure and organization inside your luggage.
  • Prefer understated, chic designs over flashy logos.
  • Want durability and maneuverability without splurging on luxury pricing.

It’s less ideal if you:

  • Prioritize soft bags over hardshell.
  • Need quick-access external pockets.
  • Rarely travel and don’t want to invest in mid-range luggage.

Final Thoughts

After several trips, I can confidently say the Level8 Luminous Textured Carry-On has earned a permanent spot in my travel rotation. Its sleek black design matches everything, the textured finish hides scuffs, and the smooth-gliding wheels make navigating airports effortless. The interior layout is simple but effective, and the added security features like locking zippers give me peace of mind.

Is it perfect? Not quite. The telescopic handle scuffs easier than I’d like, and it’s not the lightest option on the market. But those are small trade-offs compared to the overall quality and design.

For me, this carry-on strikes a good balance between style, durability, and practicality. At around $170, it feels like a smart investment, especially compared to pricier brands that don’t necessarily perform better.

If you’re looking for a reliable, polished carry-on that won’t let you down, this one should definitely be on your shortlist.
