Tips to Stay Safe whilst Travelling Abroad

If you’ve been lucky enough to travel the world, then you might have picked up a few good tricks for how to stay safe whilst travelling abroad. However, if this is something that you have never really done before, then there are a couple of things that you should bear in mind.

The main thing is to stay safe and not do anything stupid (obviously). But there are times when people do make silly mistakes. Don’t give out your address to strangers, don’t leave your bags unattended etc… Being safe doesn’t mean that you have to be boring, it just means that you don’t have to worry about losing all your belongings anymore.

Get Travel Insurance

You should never gamble when it comes to getting travel insurance. The one time you don’t have it, will be the time that you need it. If you are planning to travel for a long time, then it can come in very useful. You might lose a camera or get injured. But no matter how big or small it is, getting travel insurance can help you out significantly. Travel insurance doesn’t just cover you getting injured, but also if your flight is cancelled, if your bags get stolen plus a whole lot more.

You might think that nothing will happen, but something might. You might be caught up in the most amazing travelling moment, and then suddenly your bag is gone. Travel insurance doesn’t even need to be incredibly expensive. Instead you can easily go on a site like gobear.com to help you find the best travel insurance before you fly off!

Get Local

If you don’t have a lot of confidence, then this is something that you might struggle with. But there are some really easy steps that you can do to “make nice” with the locals. First you could just learn some simple phrases, like “Hello” or “thank you” or “have a nice day”. People will appreciate that you made an effort to learn their language.

You might find in most places that they speak your language, so even just asking what their name is and inquiring about their family is a great start to get local. People will see this as a sign of respect and will treat you well in return as well. Being nice is easy, it doesn’t cost you anything, but you will be rewarded because of it.

Live to Travel Another Day

You should never do anything stupid whilst out travelling, that much is obvious. Don’t take shortcuts down some dark alley by yourself. Your goal should always be to get home in one piece. Sure, you want to explore and see new places, but you have to be smart out it, just like you would if you were at home.

If something does happen to you, then use your common sense and keep your cool. For example, if the locals told you not to go to a certain area then you should listen to them. They are only there to help you. Stay safe and you’ll have a great time. For more tips on travelling, you can read this article here.

Hi I'm Victoria, a British girl from Manchester. After graduating from university I decided there was more to life than the hours between 9 and 5, so I packed my journalism degree into my suitcase to travel the world and find a way to make money at the same time. I now call London home, although I still travel whenever I can. I hope to inspire you to be your own boss, live life and see the world.
