Mainland Greece has much to offer its visitors, but it’s undeniable that most come here to spend time on its stunning islands. With as many as 6,000, though, it can be tough to pick one to focus your holiday around.
In this post, we’ll share several that have become our favourites over the years.
Does summer time equal party time for you and your closest pals? If so, planning a holiday on the vibrant island of Mykonos will supply nonstop good times for everyone in your group. Day and night, beach clubs pump out the latest dance hall hits for its young (and young at heart) customers, making it easy to pick up where you left off the night before.
When you aren’t dancing the night away or soaking up the sun on the beach, bide your time exploring this island’s cultural highlights. The best known of these is its signature windmills – built in the 16th century and used until the mid-20th century, they harnessed this isle’s abundant sea breezes to grind grain so it could be exported to the mainland.
If you have your heart set on a carefree holiday, Gregolimano is where you’ll want to go. Home to Club Med’s all-inclusive resort in Greece, it is situated at the base of a mountain with its own private beach.
Not content to simply lie idly in your sun lounger every day? No problem – water sports such as water skiing are offered by resort staff, allowing you to chase another adrenaline high while your partner samples the best drinks available at the outdoor lounge.
An isle known for its beaches, Zante is a cracking choice for those looking for holidays in Greece centred around beautiful sands. Before you salt away your holiday in your beach chair, though, take time to check out Shipwreck Beach from above.
While the view is cool from the beach itself, the white sands and powder blue waters of this gem can only be properly appreciated from the top of the 600-foot high sea cliffs.
Also, taking a trip to the town centre of Zakynthos will prove to be well worth your time, as its square and church date back to Venetian times. Faithfully reconstructed from scratch after a devastating earthquake in the 1950s, spending time here will make for a nice break from the beach during your holiday.
Seeking out the ruins of a once great civilization during your travels through the Greek islands? You’ll find plenty on Crete, as it has been the home of human settlements since the days of the Minoans, whose origins here date back roughly 4,600 years.
In addition to the trace remains of this ancient civilizations, you’ll find more intact structures here from the days of the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and the Ottoman Turks.
When you are done touring around, there are plenty of beaches to lounge on what is easily the biggest island in Greece – from well-serviced beaches at resorts and in towns to secluded ones without a single soul on them, there’s one here that will suit the needs of you and your travelling companions.
