The Chedi Andermatt Switzerland

Review: The Chedi, Andermatt Switzerland

There’s luxury and then there’s the kind of luxury where you walk into your hotel room, wait until the door shuts behind you, then let out a little scream of excitement. The Chedi Andermatt is that kind of luxury.

Located the ski resort of Andermatt in the SWISS Alps, The Chedi is a destination, not just a hotel. After landing in Zurich with SWISS International Air Lines, my best friend Elle and I took the train to Andermatt, with the journey taking us around 2 hours. I have to say it’s the most beautiful train ride I’ve ever taken – even more beautiful than the Amtrak through California. Winding up into the Alps, the views are absolutely epic.

On arrival we were collected by a chauffeur, who actually met us on the platform to carry our bags. It’s these little extras that really make a trip that extra special and take the hassle out of travelling.

Arriving in Andermatt

The Room

The Chedi

The 123 spacious guest rooms and suites are designed by renowned architect Jean-Michel Gathy, and have an ‘Alpine chic meets Asian sleek’ feel. Our room was one of the Deluxe Rooms, although I would call this more of an apartment than a room. Elle and I were definitely agreed that the warm woods, natural stone and upholstery made the whole space feel very plush and luxurious.

The king size bed was HUGE and incredibly comfy, with luxury hotel bedding, so we definitely slept well on our two nights at The Chedi. On arrival we were welcomed with fruit and a bottle of Pinot Noir, which was left out on the giant table in the middle.

Pinot Noir

Running the entire length of one wall was a giant mural inspired by 17th century master Peter Paul Reubens, depicting a ski scene. And a major highlight was definitely the roaring fireplace, which can be admired from the room or from the outside balcony.

The Bathroom

The Chedi Makeup Mirror

The bathroom was very open plan and opened out onto the room – something I’m seeing more and more in hotels these days. It featured a standalone bathtub, an enormous rain shower, twin sinks and toilet, plus a very well lit makeup mirror. The glass to the toilet and showers is frosted, but you can still see quite a bit through it, so we had to get used to a little less privacy than usual!

The Chedi Bathtub

The toilet was an interesting surprise – there are buttons on the side that, when activated, spurt a jet of water at your bum and then dry it like there’s a hairdryer pointing at it!

The toiletries are supplied by Acqua Di Parma, a luxury brand that has become a symbol of Italian elegance.

The View

Best of all we had a balcony overlooking the alpine scenery, and even though it was freezing outside, we still sat out there in our big fluffy robes with a morning cup of tea. It was really nice to be able to sit outside and soak up the view, even if it was freezing cold!

Connectivity

The Chedi Deluxe Room

One thing I love about hotel rooms these days is how ‘smart’ technology is being incorporated. The blinds, lights and sound system were all controlled by an iPad, which was demonstrated to us when we were shown to our room. Using an audio cable supplied to us by reception (there’s a small deposit to ensure you give it back), we were able to connect our iPhones to sockets next to the bed or seating area, and play our Spotify music over the loudspeakers in the room and bathroom. Again, this is all controlled by the iPad.

The Spa

The pool area consists of a long, large swimming pool with day beds, waiter-service and floor-to-ceiling glass windows looking out onto the snowy landscape. There’s an outdoor hot tub section too, which is heated, although I was expecting it to be a bit warmer than it actually was, considering how cold the temperatures are outside. Since the beds by the main pool were full, we popped down to the spa area, where there are three heated pools of varying temperatures – warm, hot and very hot.

After soaking ourselves in the three pools, we sat in the sauna and the steam room for a few minutes, before heading back to our room. One really cool feature of The Chedi is that they have a separate lift from the spa, so you can go back up to your room in your robe, without having to walk through the main lobby areas.

Breakfast

The Chedi Cheese Room
Breakfast is buffet style, with cold options such as cold cuts, salad, cereals, yoghurt and fruit. The hot options include the usual ‘full English’ type options such as sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms and tomatoes, as well as an egg station where the chef will cook an omelette for you. The highlight, however, is definitely the cheese room. I absolutely love cheese, so a whole room dedicated to it? Heaven. I piled my plate with cheese, fruit, nuts and fruity mustard chutneys.

Dinner

The Chedi Amuse Bouche

For dinner we dined in The Restaurant, where I tried the sea scallop carpaccio with lobster, dill, chervil and lemon-infused olive oil, followed by the Urner veal cutlet with chanterelles, garlic, parsley and butter noodles. I did however help myself to quite a few spoonfuls of Elle’s mushroom risotto – it was incredible!

The following night we ate in the Bar area, where a DJ was spinning some tunes from his Apple laptop. I ordered a trio of oysters with blinis and a caipirinha!

The Area

The ski village of Andermatt is small and feels quite remote, with a few chalets, hotels, restaurants and shops. The concierge at The Chedi provided us with a map and we stumbled out into the thick snow to go and try some traditional cheese fondue.

Since we were only in Andermatt one day and I’m a complete beginner to skiing we didn’t hit the slopes, but obviously this is what most people come here to do. With guaranteed snowfall in winter, skiiers and snowboarders of all levels come here to enjoy the powdery snow of the Gemsstock and Nätschen Mountains.

All in all our trip was about dining, pampering and doing absolutely nothing at all, which is just what we needed as a quick getaway from work. It was incredibly luxurious and relaxing, and made a great girly trip from the UK!

I flew to Switzerland with Swissair from London Heathrow to Zurich. For flights, fares and information visit their website: https://www.swiss.com/GB/en

Disclosure: I received free flights and a two night stay at The Chedi from Swissair for the purpose of a review, however, I always share my honest opinions.
