A Quick Intro to the USA

The United States may be one vast country but each state is completely different, with its own identity, food and unique culture to discover.

One minute you could be listening to country music and eating hot chicken in Nashville; the next minute you could be watching live jazz and trying gumbo in New Orleans.

Seattle is known for the Space Needle and coffee, Philly is known for Rocky Balboa and cheesesteak; Chicago is known for the Cubs and and deep dish pizza. There’s so much variety in the US that many Americans don’t even leave the country to travel.

If you like hiking there are tons of incredible national parks to discover, including Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Teton, Zion and the Grand Canyon.

If you prefer museums, architecture and culture, then there are also plenty of iconic cities to choose from like New York, Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco.

Many people dream of taking a Great American Road Trip, or at least a short road trip. Route 66, Big Sur, Blue Ridge Parkway, Hana Highway and Going to the Sun Road are just some of the best road trips in the US.

In this USA travel guide you’ll find tons of helpful info, blog posts and itineraries to help you plan your visit.

Getting Around: The US is a vast country, so most people get between cities by taking domestic flights.

Flying is the fastest option and there are several full-service carriers; Delta, American Airlines, United, Alaska Airlines, Southwest, JetBlue and Hawaiian Airlines. If you’re on a budget, you may want to look at low cost carriers such as Spirit, Allegiant or Frontier.

Major cities such as New York, Chicago and San Francisco have excellent public transportation systems but in many places in the US, car is king. In order to get the most out of your trip, you may need to rent a car from the airport. For rental cars, check out Rentalcars.com or Discover Cars to compare the best rates.

If you want to travel overland between cities and states, then you can either travel by Amtrak train, Greyhound, Megabus or Flixbus. Amtrak can sometimes be quite expensive but some of the routes are very scenic, particularly the Coast Starlight along the west coast . Bus is usually your cheapest option but journeys can take a long time due to distances.

Best Time to Visit the US

Generally the best time to visit the US is usually summertime, which runs from June to September. This is the busiest time for travel though which can mean that flight prices are more expensive. During this time the weather is usually warm and sunny all over the US, although it can get stiflingly hot in places like Nevada, Louisiana and Texas.

Other good times to visit are fall (late September-early November) and spring (late March- late May). Fall is a lovely time to visit if you want to see leaves on the trees turn into beautiful orange, yellow and red hues. Popular places to see fall leaves include New England, the Great Smoky Mountains and Lake of the Ozarks.

Winter (December-February) can be bitterly cold in northern and central parts of the US, but it’s a good time for skiing or snowboarding in mountain resorts such as Aspen, Vale or Park City.

Since the US is so vast though, the weather really does vary according to the state you’re visiting.

Florida is fairly warm and sunny all year round and is a popular spot for snowbirds looking to escape the cold in winter. The southern states cool down in winter too but the temperatures are milder than elsewhere.

If you love pumpkin spice lattes or festive decorations, you may want to plan your visit to the US to coincide with a holiday such as Halloween or Christmas. New York at Christmas is magical with ice rinks, christmas markets and lights all over the city.
