My Last Minute Holiday to Majorca

When I was a teenager my Mum would book a package holiday once a year to somewhere in Europe. It used to be a big ‘event’ and I remember the feeling of excitement as we’d show up at the travel agent looking for a last minute deal. Back then there were no online bookings – everything was done on the high street and by looking in brochures.

It’s been a long time since I’ve booked a package deal – I think the last one was to the Dominican Republic with my Mum back in 2007. These days I tend to travel for work or I book everything separately but sometimes it can add extra stress when there are so many decisions to make.

This Easter the weather has been so gloomy and wet here in the UK and I was really just in need of some last minute sunshine. If you look carefully, tour operators can have some fab bargain deals on sunny getaways abroad. So, it was time for me to experience my first package holiday in about 11 years!

Tips for booking last minute holidays

Vouchercloud TUI

I booked my holiday with TUI, but first I looked for TUI discount codes & vouchers available here to see what discount I could get off my holiday. Before I book anything these days I always search for coupon codes to apply at the checkout, since every penny counts.

At the time of writing Vouchercloud have some awesome deals with TUI, including £100 off short and mid-haul holiday bookings over £1,000, and an £80 Gift Card with Bookings Over £500 at TUI.

I managed to snag a deal that got me a £30 gift voucher on bookings over £150.

What’s cool about Vouchercloud is that the discount codes are active and regularly updated, so you know they work. There’s nothing more annoying than heading to a coupon website to find that none of the deals actually work. You can even set alerts so that you’ll be notified of new deals with TUI, as they change really regularly.

To claim a deal, just click “Get Code” and you’ll be presented with a code to copy. Hit “Shop Now” and then enter the code at checkout. Some deals don’t require codes – in this case you’ll just be provided with a link to the retailer’s website.

My Trip!

Fornalutx Prettiest Village in Spain

I was on a budget and also had limited free time, so I chose to book a three-night last minute getaway to Majorca over the Easter holidays, which came to a grand total of £372.19 for the holiday. Included in the price were flights and half board accommodation at Hotel Cala Bona for three nights, not too bad at all! Easter can be a very expensive time to travel overall with flights on their own often costing hundreds of pounds. 3 days in Majorca would be just enough to get some Vitamin D and enjoy the sunshine!

Since I chose a 6.35am flight I also opted for the £23.99 airport parking at checkout, which I thought was a really good deal. Airport parking can be really expensive these days but by booking it with TUI, I saved the hassle of an early morning bus/taxi or having to arrive at Gatwick the night before.

Once booked I received my confirmation email with all the info I needed, including flight details, baggage allowances and links for online check-in. All I had to do was show up to the airport a few days later!

One thing I love about travelling on a package holiday is that transfers to the hotel are often included. No worrying about figuring out public transport or negotiating with taxi drivers – just head to the tour operator’s airport representative and you’re directed to a coach that will take you where you need to go.

As soon as I made it to arrivals I was welcomed by huge TUI posters and a lady who directed me outside to the coach area. From there I was met by more TUI staff who directed me to my coach. It took about an hour to get to Hotel Cala Bona.

The last time I went to Majorca was when I was about 15 years old and we went to Magaluf, which is known for its nightlife, bars and clubs. Sadly there was some sort of flu virus going around the hotel and I got sick, so I never saw anything of the island outside of Magaluf. Therefore I had no idea what to expect this time around.

Cala Bona is a much more laid back resort than Magaluf with a nice waterfront promenade and some shops and restaurants. I really enjoyed the hotel – it had a smaller more family-run vibe but with clean, refurbished rooms and a nice swimming pool.

On the first couple of days I relaxed at the hotel, which had an enviable location right on the waterfront. Since I was staying at the hotel on a ‘Half Board’ basis breakfast and dinner was included, then for lunch I grabbed something from a restaurant nearby. Personally I love hotel buffets because you get a good amount of choice and are able to try a little bit of everything, unlike in a restaurant where you get one main dish that you may or may not like. In the evenings the hotel had live entertainment, with singers, bands and tribute acts. The beach closest to the hotel is shingly but if you walk 15 minutes along the promenade to Cala Millor you’ll find one of the best beaches on the island, which has soft, golden sand.

On my last day it was time to go exploring, so I hired a car in order to explore some of the more remote places on the island. First up was Alcudia Beach, which has exceptionally clear water, followed by Can Vidalet winery, which has stunning vineyards and offers €6 euro wine tastings.

The highlight of the day was definitely driving the scenic road to Fornalutx. This road is full of twists and hairpin turns, so if you get car sick you may want to sit in the front! It was like being in a car advert as I drove through the mountains with scenic views round every corner.

Fornalutx was named the “prettiest village in Spain” and it’s obvious why. The village is incredibly picturesque with cobbles streets, stone buildings and breathtaking views.

All in all I had a fantastic last minute holiday in Majorca and I was really pleasantly surprised with how beautiful and lush the island was. It was one of those trips where I didn’t know what to expect but it really surpassed my expectations and I’d highly recommend it for a quick, sunny break. If you want to book the same trip to Majorca, then simply head over to Vouchercloud to see what TUI discount codes they have.
