When to Visit
From April through September the city sponsors a traditional mountain dance. Showcased each Saturday, the event draws an audience of at least 300 per week. In October, the VFW Arts and Crafts Show features at least 100 craftspeople and fine artists offering folk art, toys, clothing, candles, photography, glass, wood, and handcrafted jewelry. Festival goers get to learn the stories, meet the artisans, and shop for the best arts and crafts in the region. Food and parking are offered for free. Perhaps Hillsville’s claim to fame lies on its biannual Flea Market. Held during Labor Day and Memorial Day, the largest flea market in America attracts a range of 250,000 to 650,000 visitors. Fairgoers include tourists from South Korea, Africa, and Germany. Other events include the Spring Arts and Crafts Show in April, the Galax Bluegrass and Old Time Fiddlers Convention in August, and Stuart Virginia Beach Music Festival in June.
Exploring the City
Carroll County Chamber of Commerce is located on North Main Street, along the old Carroll County Courthouse. The city is easily accessible by air and by car. Several of the city’s features can be best explored by bringing your own vehicles. Not to be missed are the establishments of Red Hill General Store and the Civil War Cemeteries. Apart from the seasonal festivities, the city’s location amidst Southwestern Virginia’s scenic mountains makes it an ideal destination for the traveler with interests in photography, nature, or history. Visitors are just a short distance from some of the region’s most breathtaking sceneries. Some of the most scenic trails include the 3-mile Beaver Dam Creek Walking Trail, the 10-mile Blue Ridge Parkway, the 12-mile New River Trail State Park, the 15-mile Shot Tower State Park, and finally the 25-mile Claytor Lake State Park. The local historic sites of Andy Griffith Playhouse, Chateau Morrisett Winery, Levering Orchard, Mabry Mill, Carroll County Courthouse, and Hillsville Downtown District provide the ideal spot for an eventful trip. The most notable among all these is the Carroll County Historical Museum, found downtown within the Courthouse.
