Countries to Visit on a European Road Trip

The last few months, you’ve been bouncing off the walls. Thankfully, COVID restrictions are finally easing – there’s never been a better time to go on a road trip.

The continent beckons. In this blog, we’ll share a sample itinerary you can use to plan a road trip adventure through Europe this summer.

France

After you roll off the Chunnel Train, make a beeline for Paris. If it’s your first time there, take in all the mandatory sights. The Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe,  and the Moulin Rouge sign should all be on your list. Otherwise, hit up some cafes, sidewalk bars, or a boulangerie – all are standards of street life in the City of Lights.

Then, head to the French Riviera. Between Marseilles and Nice, you’ll find scores of gorgeous Mediterranean beaches where you can soak up the sun. Remember: the further away you stay from the beach, the cheaper your accommodation will be.

Monaco

Before driving into Italy, spend a few hours exploring the city-state of Monaco. As a favoured domain of the rich & famous, massive yachts and souped-up supercars are par for the course here. Like the rest of the French Riviera, Monaco also has beaches. However, we recommend hanging out at a beach club – you’ll never know who you’ll see!

After touring Monaco’s many gardens and museums, you may want to try your luck at the Monte Carlo Casino. However, if it still feels a bit too early to game in-person, you can always play blackjack online whilst lounging outside.

Italy

Follow the windy, coastal roads of Liguria until you get to Cinque Terre. This region is famous for five fishing villages that cling into cliffs that plunge precipitously into the Mediterranean.

Rather than drive to them all, park your car and go walking. Trails link all five villages – the pass you buy to go tramping allows you to take a bus back to your starting point.

After this, steer your vehicle inland. Before heading into the Italian Alps, spend some time in Milan. Check out the Duomo and Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper, then go shopping for the latest fashions.

Switzerland

We’ve saved the best for last. As you drive into Switzerland, the Alps will confront you with some of their most spectacular vistas. Lugano offers interesting contrasts – along the lakeshore, you’ll walk amidst palms, as snowy peaks loom overhead. On a hot day, three beaches allow you to take a refreshing dip.

In Zurich, you’ll encounter the Germanic side of Switzerland. Go shopping for chocolates or watches, then tour one of its many museums. Afterwards, admire the mountain views from the shores of Lake Zurich.

Don’t Take Travel For Granted – Go Somewhere!

If the past months taught us anything, it’s that we should take nothing for granted. As of now, we can travel to Europe with few (if any) restrictions. Go now, be safe, have fun!

Hi I'm Victoria, a British girl from Manchester. After graduating from university I decided there was more to life than the hours between 9 and 5, so I packed my journalism degree into my suitcase to travel the world and find a way to make money at the same time. I now call London home, although I still travel whenever I can. I hope to inspire you to be your own boss, live life and see the world.
