A Quick Intro to Belgium

Belgium may be one of Europe’s smallest countries but it’s a country of great importance since it serves as the headquarters of both the EU and NATO.

The country is divided into several different regions – there’s the Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and the German-speaking community in the east.

You can’t miss the capital of Brussels, which is home to some beautiful architecture and lots of gourmet chocolate shops. The city’s best highlight is the Grand Place, which is surrounded by lavish Baroque townhouses as well as the town hall and city museum. If you have time, the cities of Antwerp and Ghent are also worth adding to your itinerary.

I really love Belgium – it has some very pretty towns (hello Bruges!) and I could eat my bodyweight in mussels, Belgian fries, waffles and chocolate. Oh and then there’s the beer – Belgium makes some of the world’s best beers and each one usually has its own special glass.

If you’re visiting from the UK it’s a really easy journey on the Eurostar to Belgium, so there’s no excuse not to visit.
