29 May Wine Tasting in the Karst region of Slovenia

Vinakras Winery, Karst region, Slovenia

1% of Slovenia’s territory is covered by vineyards and the country’s second largest town, Maribor, boasts the oldest grapevine in the world.

Therefore one of the things we were very keen to do on our trip was taste some wine. Our hostel owner at Alibi Hostel in Piran took us on a private tour to see some of the sights in the Karst region of Slovenia, including the Lipica Stud Farm where they breed beautiful white Lipizzaner horses.

We combined this with a visit to the Vinakras winery in Sezana, where they produce Teran wine, the Karst region’s most prized wine.

The Karst wine-growing region has distinctive red soil and the main grape variety that grows here is the Refosco Teran, which is used to produce the Karst Teran wine.

Vinakras Sezana began producing wine as far back as 1861, and buys most of its grapes from growers in the region who are members of the co-opoerative but also have their own vineyards in the area.

In the cellar we had the chance to taste the Teran wine, which is a type of Slovenian wine only produced on the Karst plateau. It has a deep cherry-red colour with raspberry, blackcurrant and other fruity flavours. It’s known to have medicinal properties because of its high acidity and polyphenol content.

The gentleman pictured below was kind enough to give us a private tasting session and tell us all about the wines we were drinking.
