25 Jun Places to Go for a Night Out in Melbourne

I’ve been to Melbourne several times, and it’s a great city for a night out. Known as Australia’s cultural capital, Melbourne has fantastic nightlife, with plenty of bars, clubs and live music venues. The city is known for producing talented musicians and bands, and there’s definitely something for people with all music tastes here. The question is where to go!

If you’re flying in from Fiji, Bangkok, or Paris and you want to know what’s going on in the city while you’re there, pick up a copy of The Age, which has a supplement that tells you what’s on.

Melbourne not only has a number of great venues, it also hosts a number of summer music festivals, including Melbourne Music Week, Falls Festival, Big Day Out, St. Kilda Festival, Soundwave, Future Music Festival, Summadayze and Brunswick Music Festival.

As for nightlife areas, these are the main places to go for a night out in Melbourne:

Fitzroy is the bohemian/artsy area of the city and is packed with alternative music venues. Here you’ll find a younger crowd, cheaper prices and plenty live music. The is also lots of cool graffiti art in Fitzroy, so it’s definitely worth a look.

The CBD has plenty of trendy, boutique bars for after-work drinks, although they are often tucked away along narrow streets.

Southbank is home to the Crowne Entertainment Complex, which sits on the banks of the Yarra River and houses a casino, designer shops, restaurants, cinemas, entertainment venues and swanky bars. Venues here include Lumia, Atrium Bar, Club 23, JJ’s Bar & Grill, Las Vegas Bar, Lagerfield Bar & Beer Garden, Velvet, Tonic and The Waiting Room. Co. and Fusion are both clubs with rockin’ dance floors if you want to dance until the early hours.

The St. Kilda area outside of the city is a great place to party if you want to chill by the beach in the day, then go out at night. It’s a really popular with backpackers, although it’s more loud and in-your-face than the inner city.  The Esplanade Hotel, or ‘The Espy’ is an iconic bar and a major live music venue in Melbourne. Many famous performers have graced its stages since it opened its doors in 1878. The Prince of Wales Bandroom is another Melbourne institution attracting local and international bands and DJs. There are a ton of activities to do here that will fulfill your nightlife needs. Make sure to plan your trip to Melbourne with Expedia so you get the best rates. This way you will have more money to spend on nighttime events.

Victoria Brewood

Hi I'm Victoria, a British girl from Manchester. After graduating from university I decided there was more to life than the hours between 9 and 5, so I packed my journalism degree into my suitcase to travel the world and find a way to make money at the same time. I now call London home, although I still travel whenever I can. I hope to inspire you to be your own boss, live life and see the world.
