Northern Lights

17 Jul How to Have an Unforgettable Travel Experience with the Northern Lights

One of the best travel experiences is to witness the natural phenomenon of the northern lights. If you’ve already seen them, you know how special it is. For those who haven’t, imagine gazing up and seeing green lights flicker and dance across the dark sky. But, it’s not always easy to see and some people are always disappointed. This article describes a few essential things to be aware of when you plan a trip to see the northern lights.

Where Can I See the Northern Lights?

The best place is at or around the Arctic Circle. Iceland is a popular destination that’s quite accessible from most parts of the world. You can also see this in Northern Norway and Finland as well as in Canada and Russia. However, this all depends on weather conditions and the time of year. If you visit in the winter, the weather is often more unpredictable and despite the long nights, you may miss out because of heavy cloud cover.

What’s the Best Way to See the Northern Lights?

In my opinion, the best way is to take a cruise to see the northern lights. When you’re on a cruise, you’re out of the city and away from light pollution.

Another reason is that if you’re out on a cruise ship, you’re flexible to wake up and look up at the night sky. This will increase the chance of seeing the lights compared to taking an independent tour. For example, in Iceland, most people need to take a tour or drive a short distance from the city to a secluded place away from light pollution. If the cloud cover doesn’t break, you miss it and have to return to your hotel. On a cruise ship, you can just step out of your cabin and witness it there and then.

Things to Be Aware of Before Planning Your Trip:

The most important thing to be aware of is that this is a natural phenomenon. This means that it doesn’t matter how much you paid or where you go, it still all depends on the weather conditions. All you can really do is increase the chances of seeing it by putting yourself in the best possible environment.

Secondly, it’s also worth mentioning that only the best cameras capture the images you see on TV or online. You probably won’t be able to see that level of clarity with your own eyes and will need a specialised camera to get it on film. Some people expect to see a high definition in the sky and they end up being disappointed. Read up on what to expect and prepare yourself in advance.

The Bottom Line:

Seeing the northern lights really is one of the best travel experiences you can have. But, you also need to remember that you can only see it in certain places when the weather conditions are right. The best thing to do is to put yourself in a position where you increase your chances of seeing them, such as by taking a cruise. And also set realistic expectations on what you’re going to see. If you do all of this, you’re certain to have an unforgettable experience.
