Comfort Hotel Grand Central, Oslo

Review: Comfort Hotel Grand Central Oslo

You can’t get a more convenient location than the Comfort Hotel Grand Central, which is located inside Oslo’s central station. You’re only a 2-minute walk from the airport express train, which is fantastic if you want to save time commuting to/from the airport.

The Location

The Comfort Hotel Grand Central is located inside central station, which means if you have an early morning flight to catch you can literally stumble out of bed and onto the airport express train, which takes just 19 minutes to get to Oslo Gardermoen. You’ll save an hour on getting to the airport, which allows for one of these cool things to do in the city. You’re only a 3-minute walk from the main shopping area and all the awesome sights of Oslo.

The hotel itself is located right next to a part of central station called Østbanehallen, which is looking a little outdated. The good news is it will be undergoing an huge makeover, and the New Østbanehallen will have all sorts of nice shops and trendy eateries. Watch this space.

The Lobby

The Lobby of the hotel is designed to be a communal, social space where people can hang out and chat, which is great for someone like me traveling alone. Down in the lobby it’s bright, colourful and airy, and the long wooden tables have desk lamps so you can bring your laptop down and do some work. If you don’t have a laptop, you can use the desktop computers. There’s also a small shop open 24 hours a day were you can buy drinks, beer, snacks, salads and toiletries. Feeling thirsty? Help yourself to free tea and coffee!

You’d be surprised how many hotels in Europe charge for Wi-Fi, but thankfully in this case there is Free Wi-Fi throughout the whole hotel, meaning you can get online and do some work.

The Rooms

Since the hotel is housed in a listed building, features such as high ceilings and original staircases give the place plenty of extra character. Of the 170 rooms in the Comfort Hotel Gran Central, 113 are unique. Home to Edvard Munch and Pushwagner, Oslo is an artsy city, and so in keeping with this theme, each room features bold art work by artist Ariel McMillon. For such a central location the hotel is incredibly quiet, and when I was inside the rooms I realised I couldn’t hear any noise from Oslo’s busy streets.

The Gym

It’s not always easy trying to stay in shape on the road, so when I book a night in a hotel I like to take advantage of the free gym facilities. Sometimes I go down to the gym only to find it’s closed, but that’s not a problem at the Comfort Hotel Grand Central because the gym is open 24 hours per day. The gym is a ‘New York style’ gym, with glass windows overlooking the lobby so you can see and be seen. It’s rather compact, but it has all the equipment you need.

The Restaurant

Every morning a free breakfast is served in the restaurant, which includes local produce, homemade strawberry jam and fresh bread. Breakfast is available Monday to Friday from 06:00-09:30am, and Saturday-Sunday 07:00-11:00am.

For lunch and dinner the restaurant also serves the best of Italian cuisine, such as delicious pastas, tomato and mozzarella salad, pannacotta and tiramisu. The aromas coming from the kitchen made me drool as I walked by!

The Secret Room

Although this room isn’t available for booking at the moment, I just HAD to take some photos of it. I let out a short gasp when I saw it. This secret room is the best in the house, and has been used for music videos and celebrity interviews. I love the gothic-looking interiors mixed with the modern furniture!

So what did I make of it? This is not your average, boring chain hotel, oh no. It oozes character with edgy design and bold colours. If you require the extra ‘frills’ like Concierge Service and Room Service then this hotel is probably not for you; to keep the prices low, the hotel has skipped the unnecessary stuff. Instead of taking tiny bottles from an overpriced Mini Bar, for example, you can visit the Lobby Shop. All in all I think the Comfort Hotel is a great option if you want somewhere reasonably priced and centrally located in Oslo.
