11 Jul 5 Things Every Hotel Should Have

When we travel we expect a lot from our chosen accommodation. And why shouldn’t we? – We all know that it’s the details that count when it comes to turning an average stay into a truly memorable one. So when you’re on a weekend mini-break, or even a longer trip, what are the things that you just can’t bear to be without? And what are the things that make your experience that extra bit special? We’ve put some thought into this too, so here we share our top five with you…

An Excellent Breakfast

For us a great breakfast shouldn’t be an add-on, it should absolutely be part of the deal when you book yourself in for a stay at any good hotel. We’re talking an array of fresh food – from fruit salads colourful enough to make a rainbow out of, to Eggs Benedict, luxury porridge, pancakes, freshly squeezed juices and more. The Hotel Cipriani in Venice gets this oh-so right, we just wish everyone did! We also like to be left alone at breakfast – this means being left in quiet peace to enjoy the start of the day, not to be interrogated by over-friendly staff. As Oscar Wilde said, ‘Only dull people are brilliant at breakfast’. We couldn’t agree more.

A Help-Yourself Pantry

We love that the wonderful Great Northern Hotel in London, a rather special new Luxury Boutique Hotel, has a pantry on every floor. Guests can help themselves to homemade cakes, teas, Nespresso coffees, books, newspapers and magazines, plus it’s all included in the price, so you don’t have to pay a single extra penny for the pleasure. We think every hotel should have this.

A Fabulous Bar

Fabulous hotel Bar

If you’re anything like us, when you’re travelling, you might not always wish to venture far in order to get yourself something strong and delicious to sip after hours. Hence, a fabulous hotel bar is rather an important item on our essentials list. For views we love the New York Bar at the Park Hyatt in Tokyo, whilst for opulent interiors we love the Bull and Bear Bar at the Waldorf Astoria in NYC, as we just can’t get enough of the stunning Mahogany panelling. For sheer convenience paired with a rather sophisticated Parisian – feel we love the GNH Bar at the Great Northern Hotel in London.

USB Charging Points

One of the perils of travelling is finding yourself out of battery on one of your many essential electrical items. Hands up who at some point has forgotten to pack their international phone adaptor? We have! USB charging points change all of this, plus that’s just one less thing in your suitcase…

Excellent in room Entertainment

Exploring new places is exhilarating but everyone needs to kick back and rest at some point. For this reason we think it’s essential that every hotel has excellent in room entertainment. Even better if this service is free, we expect movies (new releases and classics), TV channels galore, audiobooks and music. Oh and if there were to be Ipads to use in the rooms, like at the Gem Hotel in NYC, we wouldn’t think that was a terribly bad thing either…

We think that being away from home should be comfortable, relaxing and a little bit exciting too – what would you add to our list of five things every hotel should have to make your next hotel stay just perfect? We’d be intrigued to hear…

Hi I'm Victoria, a British girl from Manchester. After graduating from university I decided there was more to life than the hours between 9 and 5, so I packed my journalism degree into my suitcase to travel the world and find a way to make money at the same time. I now call London home, although I still travel whenever I can. I hope to inspire you to be your own boss, live life and see the world.
