Coming Soon to a Holiday Near You

When you’re on your holidays you just can’t help but people watch. You might have noticed the definitive groups of people who travel together in herds on holiday; perhaps you’ve spotted them when you were spying out a wish-list of tankinis on the beach, or maybe in the airport terminal. Either way, here’s a list of holiday-maker herds that you are almost guaranteed to spot on your travels:

The Stag Lads

Stag Do in Las Vegas

Who are they?

Ah, bless. These are the lads you see in the airport at 6am, ordering shots of whiskey wearing t-shirts printed, “Mark’s last weekend of freedom!” They’ll probably spend the whole holiday chanting and drinking, dressed in fancy dress. The groom-to-be will have probably been forced to wear something from a charity shop.

Their most likely holiday destination:

Malaga.

Items they couldn’t go on holiday without:

A piece of paper with the name and address of their hotel.

Items they’ve probably forgotten:

A phone charger, toothbrush and anything else needed for day-to-day living.

The Uni lasses

Who are they?

You’ll know who these girls are because they’ll be the ones jumping into the air on the sand to get a ‘natural’ shot. For these girls, it’s not so much a holiday than an extended, week-long photo shoot. They’ll rota the camerawoman depending on the situation – beach shots, pictures of their exotic food, the night out.

Their most likely holiday destination:

Phi Phi Island, Thailand

Items they couldn’t go on holiday without:

A camera. A camera charger.

Items they’ve probably forgotten:

A phrase book.

Love birds

Who are they?

Couples who are so incredibly in love they spend the whole time gazing fawningly into one another’s eyes – if there was an earth quake they wouldn’t avert their gaze. There’s definitely going to be a proposal sometime during the holiday. You’ll probably see these two battling with the self-timer to get that all important ‘framed’ holiday photo.

Their most likely holiday destination:

Paris, Venice.

Items they couldn’t go on holiday without:

Matching evening wear.

Items they’ve probably forgotten:

The ring.

Toff Tourists

Who are they?

Well to do middle class couples or families who you’ll find sat outside enjoying the weather in a North Face t-shirt and walking boots, clutching an ordnance survey map. In the rain.

Their most likely holiday destination:

Cornwall – St Ives or Padstow, swanning around Rick Stein or Jamie Oliver’s restaurants, hoping to spot one or the other.

Items they couldn’t go on holiday without:

Vintage port to sip in the cottage post-dinner.

Items they’ve probably forgotten:

The ageing Camembert that dad was supposed to take out of the fridge.

The Waltons

The Waltons

Who are they?

Pretty much any family attempting to get to the airport in time. Even for a small family of four, the panic, stress and rush of getting everyone out of the house can be a nightmare: little Jonny is throwing a tantrum because he can’t take the guinea-pig in his suitcase, and his sister has only packed crayons… these parents will be very stressed, so try your best not to engage in conversation with them.

Their most likely holiday destination:

Disney Land.

Items they couldn’t go on holiday without:

Their passports.
