The Alhambra in Granada is a fortress and palace complex that sits on a hill overlooking the city of Granada, and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Featuring Islamic architecture, intricate details and manicured gardens, the beautiful Alhambra is a highlight of any trip to the city of Granada. Alhambra literally means “the red one” in Arabic, and gets its name from the red tinges in its ramparts.
It is one of those sights that you must must must buy tickets for in advance to avoid queues and disappointment. You can get tickets for the Alhambra from the ticket offices at the Alhambra itself, or online from the Caixa Bank. You can collect the tickets at any Caixa cash machine in Spain or at the Alhambra ticket machines. When you buy your tickets, you will be given a half-hour slot to enter the Nazrid Palaces. Make sure you aren’t late. There is usually a queue of people waiting for the next session, but some people in the queue are waiting for sessions even later than this. The staff at the Alhambra will usually ask which session you are waiting for as you get ready to go in.
The gardens are particularly beautiful and relaxing, with pretty flowers, fountains and ivy-covered walls. We walked around the Generalife Gardens, and visited the Nasrid Palaces (Palacio Nazaríes). I would highly recommend visiting in late afternoon when things are a little quieter and the sun has lost a bit of its intensity.
I’ll let the photos speak for themselves. This place is out of this world!
