Finding a hostel in Italy can prove to be quite difficult; mainly because accommodation is usually budget hotels as opposed to backpacker hostels with dorm rooms. This can be OK if you are travelling in a pair and want to book a private room together and share the cost, but if you are travelling solo, it can be quite expensive to book a private single room. Luckily the Hotel Panizza offers dorm beds as well as privates.
The Hotel Panizza is a budget hotel in Milan within walking distance of the city centre. It wasn’t the easiest place to find from the directions given on Hostelbookers, but after asking a few people for directions I finally found it. It isn’t clearly marked, so make sure you write down the address and carry a map with you.
When you arrive there is a lift to take you up to the first floor, so you don’t have to worry about carrying your bags up flights of stairs. The man on the front desk was helpful and friendly too, and showed me where all the main sights were.
The dorm room was very large and clean with free Wi-Fi, although sometimes the Internet ran a bit slowly. There were four beds in the room with fresh towels and shampoo laid out nicely. There is no air conditioning, but there is a fan in the room. The bathroom was in the corridor and was extremely clean, with one shower cubicle that had good shower pressure.
There is a free breakfast in the dining room with coffee, tea, juice, pastries, breads, jam and cereal. The hotel was quite quiet when I was staying there and there was no street noise, so it’s a good place to retreat after a day of sightseeing.
I would recommend this hotel if you’re looking for somewhere cheap to stay in Milan that’s within easy reach of the sights. It was around a 15-20 minute walk to the Castello Sforzesco and the city centre. If you want to walk to the river area at night for dinner, it takes around 30 minutes. The hotel is located conveniently close to the Conciliation Metro stop so you could take the Metro too.
