The Yoho International Youth Hostel, Salzburg, is located about a 10 minute walk from the main train station, Haupbanhoff. It’s in a quiet location about 5 minutes from the Mirabell gardens and the bridge over to the old city. There aren’t many facilities directly outside, but it isn’t far to the city.
The hostel itself is large with a dining room, a bar area and a common room area with tables and computers. Members of staff weren’t overly friendly, but they were helpful when booking the Sound of Music tour and asking about train times.
The dorm rooms were very large and clean with comfortable bunk beds that had warm duvets, pillows and individual reading lights (comes in very useful when someone’s sleeping and you don’t want to turn the main light on).
Shower rooms had plenty of showers and I never had to queue or wait. Bathrooms were kept spotlessly clean and there were several hairdryers supplied free of charge.
The hostel says it plays the Sound of Music every morning at 10:30am, but we had to ask them to put it on. At breakfast you can pay 1.50 euros to help yourself to a light continental breakfast consisting of cheese, salami, cereal, tea, coffee and toast. The bar serves beers, spirits and soft drinks and in the evening you can order a main meal from the menu, which consists of chicken schnitzel, goulash, burgers, spaghetti Bolognese and a few other dishes.
If you’re looking for a party atmosphere, then the Yoho youth hostel is pretty quiet. There were a few people having drinks in the bar downstairs, but it is pretty low key.
The Sound of Music tour costs 37 euros and can be booked at reception for either 09:30am or 2pm. You can also hire bikes for 10 euros for the day, which I would highly recommend doing to see the city.
The best part about the hostel is that the Wi-Fi is free and there was good connectivity the whole time I was there.
